What are content pillars?
You've heard the term bandied about but just what exactly are content pillars?
Wonder no more - I've got you!
What are content pillars?
Content pillars are a set of topics that inform part of your marketing strategy and are usually shared on social media but could also be on your website (blogs), newsletters, or a YouTube series for example.
Once you have figured out your content pillars, creating social media content will be much simpler, because you have already thought about your different areas of expertise.
Here's how to work out your content pillars
It’s actually very simple to work out your content pillars!
Take a moment to write down the things you talk about the most, and the things that are important to you. Easy!
For example, my content pillars are:
- Podcast advice
- Social media tips
- My client work
- Behind the scenes of Untold Creative
- Real me and my life
Once you have your list, break it down into the different pillars e.g. podcast advice and then think about what you can share around that topic.
For example:
- How to start a podcast
- Different host platforms
- Artwork advice
- Seasonal vs continuous episodes
- The list goes on!
I have added my pillars to a Trello board and then I dedicated a card to each one. In that list I added a checklist of different ideas so I have a bank of content options for when I'm creating social media content, or writing newsletters.
And there we have it - content pillars!
It's really worthwhile spending time to figure them out. Not only because it will save you time in the long run, but because it will give you a clearer idea of the things you actually *like* talking about, rather than what you think you should be sharing.
