How to write a cracking blog post

I know, how meta writing a blog post on writing blog posts. But as a Virtual Assistant, writing blog posts for business owners is just one of the many tasks that I am asked to do on a regular basis. So, here are my top blog writing tips to make your blog posts succeed:

Blog post structure

Let’s start with their structure. You may notice that I started with a hook, and a short introduction to tell you what I was going to talk about in this post. That’s a great way to start, to get the reader interested and wanting to read the whole article.

Next up I added a subheading, which is a great way to break the text and article up, and brilliant for SEO (Search engine optimisation).

What tone to use in a blog post?

That does depend slightly on the tone of your business and website in general. You’ll notice that I’m using a friendly, chatty tone, but still keeping an air of professionalism and not swearing or using colloquialisms. That’s the general tone I use across my business so it fits well. If you’re very formal, then you’ll need a formal tone though. I like to think of a blog post as a chat between friends where I’m teaching them something they know about, but aren’t an expert in yet. 

Editing your blog post

Don’t forget to edit your blog post. Read it back through to make sure it makes sense and you’ve not done something like start every sentence with the same word, which can make sense to you at the time of writing, but then read back ever so strangely. If you have the time read the post back the next day with fresh eyes as you’ll be able to self-edit much easier that way.

Do I need a Call to Action (CTA)?

Yes. Always a yes to that question. At the end of the blog post, what do you want people to do next, leave a comment, visit another blog post, buy from you? Make sure you include that in the blog post wrap up paragraph at the end to give people a way to continue virtually spending time with you.
